These days, cozy games are a dime a dozen. It takes a unique hook to keep players interested in a saturated market. I Am Future–Cozy Apocalypse Survival brings some fresh and intriguing elements, achieving this mission. As a “cozy game connoisseur,” the time I had playing I Am Future was enjoyable and unique.

As the game starts, I wake up from hyper sleep after an unknown amount of time has passed—and my hand is missing. A large flood wiped out the humans. I might be the only one left! I soon realized I was not alone when I met a friend, Earl the Refrigerator. Earl helps me learn the ropes of I Am Future. The basic premise is to survive while making a life for myself on the rooftops of the flooded city. I must grow food, keep my hunger from getting too low, protect my home from mutated pests, and make the apocalypse as cozy as possible.

A vibrant, futuristic rooftop garden and energy production space overlooks a lush, urban environment surrounded by water. The scene is filled with innovative tech structures and greenery, creating a harmonious blend of nature and technology.

I Am Future does a good job of introducing the surrounding area. When I first started, my cybernetic hand was missing. I quickly got a saw attachment to cut down trees and other objects. I needed a different attachment for some objects, while others required an upgrade to an attachment I already had.

As I progressed through the rooftops, I needed to dismantle some objects blocking other areas. One of the more unique parts of I Am Future is using your cybernetic hand to help dismantle objects. That process also helped me get parts to use to craft new objects to aid my survival. I have the option to dismantle objects I find, like a tea kettle or microwave. Dismantling opens a mini game where I can unscrew bolts and slowly take the object apart to get items – like wire, computer chips, or lightbulbs – to help me build. This was one of my favorite parts of the game and was like scavenging for items I could dismantle.

Animated game scene of a man with gadgets overlaying a 3D device blueprint. Text reads: "Craft gadgets and disassemble old devices."

I also encountered several other robots while playing the game. One of the first things I unlocked was a tower, which allowed me to use a drone to access new areas. These robots offered items or special supplies I needed to upgrade my arm. I unlocked minion robots that could help me collect objects and automate tasks, which is a fantastic feature. I’m a sucker for automation in games. (Plus, they recharge in an electrified swimming pool, which I thought was adorable.) At night, enemies appear, attempting to destroy my crops and cause chaos. However, they never feel too bothersome, as you can fend off the enemies with bug spray or adjust the cozy level in the settings to control how much damage they do. You can even change the settings to prevent them from eating your crops entirely.

Robots relax in a round pool with pink caps. A sign reads “EVOLUTION can't be stopped :)”. Lush garden setting with machinery nearby.

Final Grade: Grade A+

I Am Future - Cozy Apocalypse Survival blends the charm of cozy gameplay with innovative survival mechanics. From exploring the flooded city rooftops to dismantling everyday objects for valuable resources, the game keeps things engaging without overwhelming you. The combination of quirky robots, automation features, and customizable difficulty levels sets I am Future apart in a crowded genre. Whether you’re building your cozy little corner of the apocalypse or simply enjoying the relaxing rhythm of survival, I Am Future proves a cozy game can still offer plenty of fresh ideas and unexpected moments. I found it to be a truly unique experience that offers comfort and challenge in equal measure.
