Plucking at your Heartstrings: Symphonia Review | The Gamerheads Podcast

They say music evokes emotion and Symphonia sets its sights on achieving that goal. Symphonia is a peaceful, single-player platformer about skill and timing, not violence. You play as Philemon, a violinist, who sets out to help the mysterious Bandmaster gather musicians to save the world from silence. 


I had the privilege of playing Symphonia’s demo at The Mix during PAX West 2024 in Seattle. I also had the opportunity to discuss the musical elements with the developer, Sunny Peak. She revealed all the music was composed exclusively for Symphonia, drawing inspiration from the romantic era of classical music. As a former violinist and clarinetist, I was instantly captivated by the game’s opening notes, which stirred nostalgic feelings and reminded me of the joy and passion I felt while playing music. She enthusiastically cheered me on throughout the demo as I navigated each challenge, creating a truly immersive experience that felt like a personal musical performance.



Symphonia is set to release on December 5th, 2024. I am excited to have early access to share all the exciting details with you! As we anticipate its release, let’s delve into a glimpse of its gameplay. Philemon’s artistic design and fluid movements evoke a captivating blend of Hollow Knight’s dark fantasy and The Phantom of the Opera’s dramatic flair. Philemon is exactly how I would imagine a violinist, adorned with black pants, a long white tux coat, and a matching white mask. The level design and Heart of Symphonia bring whimsy to the game which made me feel like I was traveling through a music box. The world was brought to life as I played music in the flower-like loudspeakers which would move platforms, objects in the background like little railcars, or even clear obstacles like wind or vines.


The game's mechanics were typical of a platformer with some unique takes on movement. I enjoyed the ingenious play on words for the jump mechanic. The ability to ‘pluck’ the violin for a higher jump mirrors the pizzicato technique, where violinists pluck the strings rather than using a bow. As I continued forward, a unique gameplay element reminiscent of Angry Birds emerged; I could attach myself to cushions and catapult myself in various directions, extending my reach and adding a dynamic layer to the platforming. I also enjoyed the secret puzzles hidden throughout each area. They kept me on my toes, but with a bit of thought–and maybe a lucky jump or two–I was able to decipher the puzzle and obtain the collectable. Some of the collectables even unlocked new abilities, making the challenge worthwhile. 


The carefully crafted musical cues evoked emotions, from awe and wonder to excitement and triumph, deepening my connection to the world. In the darker, quieter areas, the music slowed down, creating a mysterious and mystical atmosphere. Conversely, in vibrant, revitalizing locations, the music picked up the pace and danced with joy, mirroring the lively surroundings. The attention to detail was impressive, like a clarinet and other woodwind melodies accompanying the Woodwind Glasshouse, decorated with woodwind instruments in the background. To further elevate my experience, the music would synchronize with important moments like jumps or flying through the air, making me feel like the conductor of my performance. 



The smoothness of the controls and gameplay were pleasantly surprising. I recall the developer mentioning potential platform adjustments and rearrangements as she watched me struggle, which were clearly implemented in the final version. 


One minor challenge I encountered involved certain moving platforms requiring musical input. If I didn’t react quickly enough, I’d be stuck with no way forward. On a few occasions, a collectible was locked behind the moving platform but was now stationary, teasing me with its unattainable prize. Restarting was the only way to proceed forward. Fortunately, the restart mechanic placed me at the loudspeaker, minimizing the need for extensive backtracking.

Symphonia’s captivating art style, combined with its passionate musical score, created an emotionally resonant experience. The game’s visuals, intricate details, and atmospheric touches like vines and falling leaves, drew me into a world of wonder and mystery. I loved the story it told through the different melodies and musical cutscenes, leaving room for personal interpretation as I explored the world and confronted the threat of silence. The dynamic controls and unique mechanics also added a layer of excitement to each new area. Symphonia offers an unforgettable experience that will resonate with both music lovers and platforming enthusiasts alike. It’s a symphony of fun that will captivate you from the first note to the last. Embrace your inner musical prodigy and pick up your newest instrument, Symphonia
