Pinball M DLC: Camp Bloodbrook Review: A Tribute That is Worthy of Being Played Any Day of the Week (Even Friday)

Platform reviewed: Xbox Series X/S

Also on: Steam, Playstation 4/5, Nintendo Switch

Price: $4.99

Camp Bloodbrook is the newest table from Zen Studios for Pinball M. Let’s start at the beginning—what is Pinball M? Good question. Pinball M is a game where you can download packs of tables or individual tables, all of which revolve around a horror theme. Some of these themes are licensed (Chucky’s Killer Pinball, The Thing, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.), while others are unlicensed (as of this writing, only one: Wrath of the Elder Gods). This newest table is Camp Bloodbrook sounds like a table with no affiliation, but as soon as you start to play, it becomes abundantly clear that it draws heavy inspiration from Friday the 13th.

The table is set in a campground and revolves around a masked killer trying to hunt down counselors attempting to escape. There are a decent number of missions to partake in, which are unlocked in an alcove by the boathouse after hitting enough bumpers. There are five different story missions that range from looking for the killer to hiding from him to escaping the campground. Most missions are completed by hitting a series of ramps and/or targets within a set time limit. There are also other side missions scattered around the camp (aka table) for you to unlock. Completing these will give you point bonuses or the almighty multiball.

The table itself features a very beginner-friendly layout, with a plethora of nicely spaced ramps that are easy to hit. The paddles at the bottom are slightly closer together than usual, making it easier to keep the ball in play. There is an animated character on the table at all times, out of the field of play, which is a nice touch. However, during certain missions, either the character or the madman himself will be on the field of play, potentially blocking a lane you are trying to shoot, adding an increased challenge. The table is decorated to evoke the feel of a 'haunted' camp, with music and sound effects that match the ambiance nicely. One of the ramps is even a giant machete that will occasionally swipe across the table quickly during a mission or when chasing a multiball.

Final Grade: A

If you enjoy pinball, this table is well worth your time. The ease of access makes it ideal for players of all skill levels. If you’re a fan of horror and pinball, this is a no-brainer—you’ll be chasing high scores and trying to escape the killer for days and weeks to come. This may be my personal favorite original table they've released in quite some time, and it is well worth playing.
