I was able to meet with Dave Oelkers, Lead Animator, and Jesse Snyder, Creative Director, to preview an up-and-coming mobile geo-location RPG called Mythwalker. Characters are inspired by the world’s mythology including the adorable corgi that adorns the posters around PAX West. There are many reasons why I believe this game is going to take the world by storm once it’s fully released, but I’ll just name a few of the game's unique qualities.
There’s a seemingly limitless array of ways to personalize your character. I was able to choose from three classes: Warrior, Priest, and Spellslinger. I opted to go for Spellslinger as it was described to me as a dual-wielding cowboy character complete with the tall hat and dual wands. Jesse also mentioned that they wanted the RPG to stand out with unique character races. There were options like Humans, Wulven, and Annu. I was compelled to choose Wulven because they represented that adorable corgi I had been seeing all weekend, but I ultimately decided to pick Annu, a bird-like person. For the sake of time, I went with my gut when it came to customization of my character. However, I could have easily spent 15-20 minutes creating the perfect look. I was able to customize body shape, skin color, feather color, and even my character’s voice. There were many options to choose from!
Once I was ready, I set out into the mystical world of Mytherra. Right away I could see similarities to other geo-location games I’ve played like Pokemon Go and Pikmin Bloom, but what caught my attention immediately was the shimmery creature that was near my character. I learned that these are called Navigators and once they have enough Portal Energy they allow me to tap-to-move within the game. I’ve often been frustrated by restricted movement in other geo-location games so I’m excited to have the flexibility to move my character a short distance. I was curious about how much Portal Energy was available, as most geo-location games prioritize movement of the player. Dave clarified that it’s a limited resource that builds up over time and the player will have to use it strategically. There are four different Navigators that are available each with their own distinct colors and animations.
The game’s combat and mini-games are other noteworthy aspects. The combat system adapts to my location. Since I was in the heart of Seattle, I faced city-dwelling creatures like a spider. Once the battle arena loaded, I was able to navigate and sling my spells using simple taps. Within no time, my first battle was won and I gained a bunch of XP! The RPG elements of the game allowed me to see my progress, including completed quests and potential skill upgrades. Jesse emphasized the game’s adaptability, allowing players to choose between hardcore builds and strats or a casual experience. While my skill upgrades and builds won’t hinder my gameplay, some choices may be more strategic to have a greater advantage against the enemies I face.
There is also an extensive crafting system that requires materials gathered in the wild. I enjoyed the mining and logging mini-games, which were simple yet satisfying. I thought the animations were impressive, and I loved having the ability of crafting gear and weapons to enhance my character.
I can’t forget to discuss a feature that I’m particularly excited for, which is co-op adventuring parties! I love that while being in a party I can receive bonuses and assist my friends in battles and quests. I can envision a party where I’m a Spellslinger and my friends can support my adventures by being a Warrior or Priest. I am looking forward to being able to go on real-life walks and adventuring together in Mytherra.
I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming Mythwalker closed beta in the US. I truly believe that Mythwalker has the potential to be the next groundbreaking geo-location game due to its limitless possibilities. I love their commitment to the classic RPG elements like skill upgrades, crafting, and builds while also incorporating innovative features like Navigators and co-op parties. I can’t wait to start slinging spells in the beta soon!
