Hop in love with this cozy frog collecting game. Kamaeru, A Frog Refuge is all about restoring the biodiversity to the wetlands while creating new habitats for the frogs you collect. While the main mission is to save the frog’s habitat, I particularly enjoyed collecting the frogs by taking photos of them and feeding them different items.
There was an appealing amount of activities that kept me engaged in the gameplay. Upon unlocking the new area, I had the opportunity to cultivate the wetlands, growing a variety of crops. These harvests enabled me to cook various items, which I could then sell to purchase charming accessories to attract new frogs. Another unique thing I thought was creative was being able to breed the frogs I’ve collected. Doing this allowed me to discover frogs I’ve not found yet and add to my collection.
I really enjoyed the art style and vibrant colors of the game. I played this game both on PC and my Steam Deck and there was little to no difference in both the gameplay and visuals. This game was released back in June and I was impressed at how well it worked on the deck when I went on vacation in June. To have a new game developed well enough (even before the official verification on the store page) tells a lot about the quality of the game.
There were a few ribbits about the game, but nothing that made the game unplayable. First, the frog breeding mechanics felt a bit too random and I ended up breeding a lot of the same frogs that I already collected. I also ran into an issue where I had to restart the story when I started to play on my Steam Deck. I’m not sure if it’s because I attempted before the verification or if the game was too new. It wasn’t a huge deal for me, but there was about an hour of gameplay I had to redo. I’m hoping this issue has been fixed now.
Final Score: A-
If you’re looking for a new cozy game that involves saving frog’s habitats, this game is definitely worth a hop. It was relaxing and fun to discover all the different frogs. Not only that, I got to make the game my own with endless possibilities and customizations of the wetlands. Lastly, the story and visuals complemented each other in this cozy world that made me want to keep coming back for more.
