Everdeep Aurora is one of those games I wish I had more time to explore. Just as I began to get a feel for the gameplay, the demo came to an end. This non-violent Metroidvania features a small feline protagonist who awakens in a peculiar world where the inhabitants have retreated underground following a devastating meteor shower. As I navigate this mysterious landscape in search of my mother, my only tool is a drill, which allows me to dig deeper into the earth in hopes of uncovering her whereabouts.
As I journeyed deeper, I encountered a variety of intriguing characters. These characters truly highlight the game's brilliance, revealing a complex underground society. Within this hidden world, I found allies who generously offered their assistance without conditions, while others demanded that I complete certain tasks before they would share any information. This experience immersed me in the world’s hierarchy, where some individuals wielded significant influence, towering above the rest, while others navigated their existence one day at a time.
To dig deeper, I needed red crystals, a vital resource for powering my drill. Locating the crystals was relatively straightforward; however, finding a smith where I could transform them into fuel for my battery for my drill proved to be more challenging. The only thing I had to guide me was a map on the right side, showing me where I’ve been.
In addition to the ensemble of characters, the artwork also caught my attention. It evoked memories of early computer games with its simple yet expressive graphics. The artistry communicated the dynamics and the essence of the world. Every time I ventured into a new area, the shift in color palette subtly indicated a change in the environment. Some regions embraced warmer, more inviting hues, whereas others employed stark reds and browns to create a harsher atmosphere.
As I mentioned, my time with the demo was brief, leaving me eager for more. I’m excited to explore what awaits in Everdeep Aurora and to engage with its world once again.
